Jianchuan Black Pottery - Mini Black Ash

This pottery comes from the Jianchuan area of Yunnan, rooted in the daily life of the Bai people and made without glaze. In the final stage of firing, pine wood is added, and the kiln is sealed, so carbon from the smoke penetrates the clay and blackens it naturally.

Subtle silver tones and variations appear in the light, left by fire, oxygen and time, so each piece is unique. The lustre and colour continue to develop as it ages.

The technique has been passed down for generations by the Jianchuan Dong Yuechang Heitao Ji family of artisans, who guard it closely.
