Akari 20N Table Light

The Akari 20N Table Light by Akari light sculptures is handcrafted at the Ozeki workshop in Gifu, Japan. To create the unique ribbed shape, thin bamboo rods are stretched across the original wooden form designed by Noguchi. Then handmade washi paper from the inner bark of a mulberry tree is cut into strips and painstakingly adhered to the bamboo ribbing. Once the glue has dried and the shape is set, the wooden form is removed, resulting in a resilient paper form that can be collapsed flat.

In 1951 Isamu Noguchi visited the town of Gifu, Japan, known for its manufacture of lanterns and umbrellas from mulberry bark paper and bamboo. Noguchi designed the first of his lamps that would be produced by the traditional Gifu methods of construction. He called these works Akari, a term meaning light as illumination, but also implying the idea of weightlessness. Today, Akari Light Sculptures by Isamu Noguchi are considered icons of modern design, displaying a harmonious blend of Japanese handcraft and modernist form.

Orders placed after 10am weekdays, on weekends or public holidays will be processed the following business day.

* International orders with items from multiple locations will be consolidated before shipping adding 1-2 business days to processing time.

Online Returns

• Eligible items may be returned for exchange or store credit within 14 days of purchase.
• No refunds unless faulty.
• Returned products must be unused, unwashed, in “as new” condition with all original tags, labelling and packaging intact. Returns are accepted at the discretion of our staff.
• Socks, underwear and earrings may not be returned for hygiene reasons.

Sale Returns

• Items discounted by less than 40% can be returned for exchange or store credit within 14 days of purchase.
• Final Sale items (items discounted by 40% or more) and sale items sold with additional promotional discount codes are not eligible for return or exchange unless faulty. 

Return shipping

• Charges will be deducted from eventual store credit or invoiced before shipment of exchanged goods.
